Nashville, Tennessee is known for its vibrant music scene, delicious Southern cuisine, and friendly locals. However, beneath the surface lies a deep-rooted issue that affects many of the city’s residents: veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, around 11-20% of veterans who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom suffer from PTSD in a given year. In Nashville alone, there are approximately 25,000 veterans, many of whom have been affected by the invisible scars of war.
One local organization that is working tirelessly to support veterans with PTSD is Operation Stand Down Tennessee (OSDT). Founded in 1992, OSDT provides a wide range of services to help veterans reintegrate into civilian life, including housing assistance, job training, and mental health support.
One of the most impactful programs offered by OSDT is their PTSD support groups. These groups provide a safe space for veterans to share their experiences, struggles, and triumphs with others who understand firsthand what they are going through. Through group therapy sessions, veterans learn coping mechanisms, stress management techniques, and ways to navigate the challenges of daily life with PTSD.
One veteran who has benefitted greatly from OSDT’s PTSD support groups is John, a former Marine who served two tours in Iraq. John struggled with nightmares, flashbacks, and intense anxiety for years after returning home. He felt isolated and misunderstood, until he found the courage to attend a support group at OSDT.
“It was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders,” John recalls. “For the first time, I didn’t feel alone in my struggles. I met other veterans who were going through the same thing, and we were able to lean on each other for support.”
In addition to organizations like OSDT, Nashville also offers a variety of alternative therapies for veterans with PTSD. From equine therapy to art therapy to mindfulness meditation, there are countless ways for veterans to find healing and peace in Music City.
One such program is offered by the Nashville Veterans Yoga Project, a non-profit organization that provides free yoga classes to veterans and their families. Yoga has been shown to be an effective tool in managing PTSD symptoms, as it helps to calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and increase mindfulness.
In a city known for its honky-tonks and hot chicken, it’s easy to overlook the struggles faced by veterans with PTSD. But the reality is that many of our nation’s heroes are fighting a different kind of battle every day. By supporting organizations like OSDT and the Nashville Veterans Yoga Project, we can help ensure that these veterans receive the care and support they deserve.
